Mr. Bettmann was born in Kansas and lived there for approximately a decade until moving with his family to South Dakota in the mid 1960s. He studied at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City for a year before proceeding to the University of South Dakota in Vermillion where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in l977 and his Master of Public Administration degree in 1978. Mr. Bettmann earned his Juris Doctor degree in 1981 from the University of Idaho at Moscow, Idaho. He returned to Rapid City in 1981 and served as a Deputy States Attorney until 1983. He has been engaged in the private practice of law since 1983. Mr. Bettmann is licensed to practice law in state trial and appellate courts in South Dakota and Nebraska, federal courts in South Dakota, the Eighth Circuit United States Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. His professional associations include the American Bar Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the South Dakota Trial Lawyers Association, Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity, South Dakota Bar Association, Nebraska Bar Association. He served as past chairman and is a current member of the Intellectual Property committee of the South Dakota Bar Association. Mr. Bettmann is an experienced attorney whose areas of practice include all aspects of civil and criminal trials, litigation and appeals, business, corporate and commercial practice, personal injury (particularly motorcycle accident cases), wrongful death, real estate, gaming law, family law, wills/probate and insurance defense.
